FlickStackr for iPhone & iPad

Today, AppCorner is reviewing and giving away FlickStackr, a wonderful Flickr client for the iPhone and iPad created by iPont.
Flickr is awesome. Not only is there a free membership, but with the reasonably priced premium option, you can use it to share your photos, as a backup, or even as an online art gallery. It looks clean, it’s easy to use, and it is a wonderful tool for photographers.
Flickr even created an official iPhone app, and to be honest it’s pretty good, even if somewhat limited in features. This is where FlickStackr comes in. With this app, you’ll be able to explore, save and edit Flickr photos.

The User Interface

The UI is probably the most important element in an iPhone app. Remember, you’re touching the graphics on the screen, which means that they have to feel organic, natural and polished. A good UI is the first step towards success in the App Store.
In FlickStackr’s case, the UI is a mixed bag.
On the iPhone, the app feels well designed, but a little rushed. The overall feel is good. The colors are balanced, the spaces are well thought out and the quite complex menu structure is well implemented. It’s small details, like pixelized user icons, exaggerated font shadows, unaligned text boxes and big empty spaces followed by zones packed with dense information that somewhat spoil the user experience.

On the iPhone, the UI is not so pretty, even though it is very functional

On the iPad, the app seems more polished. iPont clearly created the app with the iPad in mind, which makes sense due to the bigger screen.

I still have to disagree with the many reviewers swooning over FlickStackr’s UI. On the other hand, you might not even notice the few flaws unless you are a designer. Also, props to iPont for creating something really new: there are hardly any stock iOS design elements in the app, which is really refreshing.

Features

FlickStackr really shines through its features.
To be short: There’s nothing you can do on Flickr that you can’t do here.
But let’s have a look at some of the highlights.

  • The stacks: this function is so brilliant that it is in the app’s name. Basically, you’ll be able to to send pictures to a stack as you browse Flickr, be it you photostream or someone else’s. It sounds quite simple, and it is. Stacks are useful if you want to make lists of photos without having to publish it on Flickr (like your regular favorites), or if you simply want to enjoy them in a slideshow.
  • The slideshow: again, a really simple function. Just press the play button and it will automatically play the remaining pictures in the stream or stack as a slideshow. You can even hook you iOS device up to a TV or VGA screen to share the slideshow with other people
  • Editing: You can edit the tags, the sets, the collections, the geo-tagging, the description, the groups, the title… Pretty much everything.

The app is packed with features and truly shines on the iPad's bigger screen

And that’s far from it. Other features include, in addition to Flickr’s official app’s functions, the ability to share to Facebook or Twitter, the ability to have multiple accounts (which is a good idea if the iPad is shared by the family), and even the possibility to upload pictures directly from your iPhone.

Verdict

I like this app very much. For the occasional Flickr user, the official app is enough, but FlickStackr is a perfect tool for the photographer on the road. Feature-wise, this app is extremely complete. A few points could be changed like the UI and the performance on the iPad, but these are are very minor things. An while I’m at it, why not add a geo-tagging system for dSLRs and incorporate it, just like this app?
FlickStackr costs €1,59 / 1,99$ and is the best Flickr app available. Oh, and did we mention that the app is universal? Yes, it’s the same app for both the iPad and the iPhone!

FlickStackr is packed with features. Some are truly useful, like the stack function. I simply can’t find something negative to say here. FlickStackr is the swiss-knife for web-hooked photographers.
